3rd-Party Cookie Settings

  • Updated

Overview

Almost every modern browser offers the ability to block 3rd-party cookies for added privacy. Some browsers even enable this behavior by default. When using an LMS, every LTI application is considered by the browser to be a 3rd-party because it's content does not come from the same URL as the LMS.

While Harmonize is able to detect this configuration and allow you to launch most screens into a separate window, users will have a much smoother experience if users allow us to use cookies in their school's LMS. Below are instructions on how to enable this in each of the browsers we support.

Warning: If possible, allow cookies only for this site. In some browsers, including Safari, the only available option may be to have Harmonize launch into a new window or to enable third-party cookies more broadly. If all third-party cookies are enabled, will allows any third-party service, not just Harmonize, to set cookies in your browser on any site, not just your school's LMS.

Google Chrome

Chrome users have three options.

Option 1: Allow Your School's LMS to Always Use Third-Party Cookies

  • Navigate to a Harmonize activity in Chrome.
  • Copy the URL for the site (this should be your school's LMS).
  • Go to Settings in your Chrome browser.
  • Scroll down to the Privacy and security section and click on the row labeled Third-party cookies
  • Scroll down the page to the field labeled Sites allowed to use third-party cookies and click the Add button.
  • In the dialog that appears, paste the URL you copied, and then click Add.

  • The URL for your school's LMS will now appear in the allow list.

Option 2: Allow Your School's LMS to Use Third-Party Cookies for 90 days

To learn more, go to Chrome's Guide: Allow third-party cookies temporarily for a specific site.

Option 3: Enable All Third Party Cookies

To learn more, go to Chrome's guide: Turn Cookies On or Off.

Warning: This allows other third-party services, not just Harmonize, to set cookies in your browser for any website. Proceed with caution.

Mozilla Firefox

  • Navigate to a Harmonize activity in Chrome.
  • Copy the URL for the site.
  • Go to Settings in your Firefox browser.
  • Click on the Privacy & Security link in the left side of the page.
  • Scroll down the page to the Cookies and Site Data section and click on the Manage Exceptions button.
  • In the dialog that appears, paste your copied URL in the address field, click Allow, and then click Save Changes.

Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Edge users may do either of the following:

Apple Safari

Safari users do not have a way to limit cookies only to their school's LMS. Users have three options.

Option 1: Do Not Enable Cookies (Harmonize launches in a new window)

You do not have to enable cookies. Instead, you can allow Harmonize to launch in a new window. This behavior generally works well from a student perspective. It is less ideal for instructors, particularly those who use Canvas.

Option 2: Allow All Third-Party Cookies

Warning: This allows other third-party services, not just Harmonize, to set cookies in your browser for any website. Proceed with caution.

  • Go to the Safari app  on your Mac.
  • Open the Safari menu and select Settings.
Safari menu: Privacy

  • Go to Privacy and uncheck the box next to Prevent cross-site tracking.
Privacy button: prevent cross-site tracking unchecked

Option 3: Use Another Browser

While Safari is the built-in browser on Apple devices, you can always add a different browser. Our other supported browsers are Chrome, Firefox, and Edge.

Frequently Asked Questions

I added Harmonize to the allow list. Why is Harmonize still launching into a new tab or window?

Rather than allowing Harmonize to send cookies, you need to allow your school's LMS to use third-party cookies on your device. Go to a Harmonize activity in your school's LMS, copy the URL, and paste it into the allow list.

Where can I find the allow list for third-party cookies in Safari?

Safari only lets users allow or disallow all third-party cookies. There is no way to add an exception just for Harmonize or just for your school's LMS. If you don't want to enable cookies for all third-parties, you can allow Harmonize to launch into a new tab, or you can choose a different browser.
