Overview
Harmonize works closely with Canvas so that you can manage activities, groups, sections, rubrics, due dates, and more without bouncing between systems.
To use these integrations, you’ll need to Enable Canvas Features in Harmonize. You only need to do this once per institution you teach at. The authorization will apply across your Harmonize activities in all your courses.
For Harmonize to function correctly, you must enable Canvas Features. Without them, Harmonize can still handle very basic Canvas functions such as sending grades to the Gradebook and making student submissions available in SpeedGrader, but many of the features that make Harmonize work smoothly with Canvas will not be available.
What Can I Do When Canvas Features Are Enabled?
Enabling Canvas Features allows Harmonize to work with additional information and tools from your Canvas course.
Depending on the features available at your institution, you can:
Use Canvas Groups in Harmonize
Create Harmonize activities that use the groups you have already created in Canvas. Harmonize can keep group membership in sync as students are added to or moved between groups.

Use Canvas Sections in Harmonize
Use your existing Canvas sections to organize student activity and filter what you see in Harmonize.

Use Harmonize-Generated Rubrics for Grading in Canvas
Create or generate a rubric in Harmonize and use that rubric when grading the activity in Canvas SpeedGrader.

Set Canvas Assignment Dates from Harmonize
Set availability dates and due dates while building or editing your Harmonize activity. Harmonize can update the associated Canvas assignment for you.

Add Harmonize Milestones to the Canvas Calendar
Harmonize activities can include multiple Milestones, such as one due date for an initial post and another for replies. When Canvas Features are enabled, Harmonize can sync these Milestone due dates with Canvas so that students can see them in places such as the Canvas Calendar and To Do list.

How to Enable Canvas Features
You only need to complete these steps once.
- Open an existing Harmonize activity, or create a new one.
- In the Instructions section of the Harmonize window, click Edit.
- On the Edit Topic page, click Enable Canvas Features.
- Don't see the button? You may have already enabled Canvas Features. If so, there is nothing else you need to do.
- Canvas will open in a new browser tab or window. Click Authorize.
- Return to Harmonize.
That's it. Canvas Features are now enabled for your Harmonize activities at your institution.
What Happens If I Don't Enable Canvas Features?
You can still use Harmonize with Canvas, but the integration will be very limited.
For example:
- Grades can still pass from Harmonize to the Canvas Gradebook.
- Student submissions can still appear in Canvas SpeedGrader.
- You can still set assignment due dates directly in Canvas.
However, you will not be able to use several deeper Canvas integrations. For example, you may not be able to:
- Create activities organized by Canvas groups or sections.
- Set Canvas assignment dates directly from Harmonize.
- Use Harmonize-generated rubrics for grading in Canvas.
- Sync multiple Harmonize Milestone due dates to the Canvas Calendar and student To Do list.
For the best experience using Harmonize in Canvas, we strongly recommend enabling Canvas Features.
FAQ
Do I need to enable Canvas Features for every Harmonize activity?
- No. You generally only need to enable Canvas Features once per institution you teach at. After you authorize Harmonize, you can use the available Canvas integrations across your Harmonize activities.
Do my students need to enable Canvas Features?
- No. This authorization is completed by the instructor.
What if I enabled Canvas Features but still can't use a particular feature?
- The Canvas Features available in Harmonize can vary slightly by institution. For example, your institution may allow group and section syncing but not rubric syncing.
- If you have enabled Canvas Features enabled but cannot access a feature you expect to use, contact your institution's Canvas administrator or reach out to support@harmonizelearning.com.
What if I don't see the Enable Canvas Features button?
- Canvas Features may already be enabled for your account. Continue working in Harmonize and check whether the Canvas feature you want to use is available.
Can I still use Canvas rubrics without enabling Canvas Features?
- Yes. You can attach a Canvas rubric to the Canvas assignment associated with your Harmonize activity.
- Enabling Canvas Features is required when you want to create or generate a rubric in Harmonize and then use that rubric for grading in Canvas SpeedGrader.
Why don't all of my Harmonize due dates appear in the Canvas Calendar or To Do list?
- Harmonize activities can have multiple Milestone due dates. To sync those individual Milestones with the Canvas Calendar and student To Do list, Canvas Features must be enabled.
- If Canvas Features are not enabled, you can still set the primary assignment due date directly in Canvas.
