Creating Standalone Polls in Brightspace, Blackboard, and Moodle

  • Updated

Overview

Have you ever been in the middle of teaching a course and start to wonder, "What are my students thinking?" Well, Harmonize polls is going to make that really easy to find out. Follow the steps outlined below to add a stand-alone Harmonize poll to your course!

Creating a Standalone Poll

Creating a standalone Harmonize Poll begins with the Harmonize Component Selector, which is the same menu used when creating graded Harmonize discussions. Accessing the selector differs per LMS. If you need help finding the selector, visit Creating Graded Discussions, select your LMS from the list, and follow the steps until the Harmonize Selector appears. Then return to this help guide and follow the steps below.

  • Navigate to the Harmonize Component Selector.
  • Choose Poll from the Harmonize component selector.

  • Select an existing poll if one has already been made or click Create New to build a new poll.
  • Give the poll a name, then decide if the poll will be Not Graded of Graded.
  • Click the Create Poll button.

  • You will be presented with the Edit Poll page. If this page does not appear, you may navigate to your poll as you would any other Harmonize content and click on the Poll's title to open it.
  • Create a new Poll Prompt and in the area below begin to add your Poll Options. For more options, click Add Option. Remove Poll Options by clicking the X to the right of the Poll Option field.
  • Choose how the poll results will appear to others. Your options are Always, After Participant Votes or the Poll is Closed, After the Poll is Closed, or Never.
  • Use the Harmonize Editor to add more content to your poll:
    • Click the Add Text button to add a text row.
    • Click the Add Code button to add a non-executable code row.
    • Click the Add Media button to add images and video.
    • Click the Add Link button to add a URL.
    • Click the Record Audio/Video button to record video or audio.
    • Click the Add Polling button to create additional Poll Prompts.
    • Use the arrows on the right of each new row to move Harmonize Editor content above the Poll Prompt.
    • Remove a Harmonize Editor row by clicking the "X".

  • Once you are finished creating your poll, click Save & Close. The poll will now appear in your LMS for students to access and make their selections.

Viewing Poll Results

The poll pictured below is set to show results after voting and shows the poll's current results. Note that instructors are given the option to close the poll and download a summary of the poll results or a list of the poll participants.

The summary of results shows a list of the responses, the number of responses received, and the percentage of overall responses for each, while the participant list will show a breakdown of every student's last name, first name, I.D. and the percentage they completed.

A few things to note about Graded Polls:

  • Graded and ungraded polls will appear the same to a student.
  • Though a poll does not have a correct or incorrect answer, the instructor can always see how many participants have responded, close the poll, or download results.
  • Student activity for Graded Polls will populate in the gradebook as the student responds to the Poll Prompts.
  • Points are allocated based on the number of prompts in your poll and the total number of points assigned to the overall poll. For example:
    • A 25 point poll with one prompt will send 25 points to the gradebook when the student responds to the prompt.
    • A 25 point poll with five prompts will send 5 points to the gradebook for each prompt to which the student responds.

Editing a Poll

To edit a poll, click the three dot menu where you will find the edit button as well as another link to download all poll results. Adjustments may be made from the edit menu as long as the poll has not been closed.
